PLAAS is launching a revolutionary farmers blockchain platform

Agriculture in Africa stands on the cusp of transformation change. The market for food and beverage market from Africa is expected to top $1 trillion in value by 2030. However, there is a contrast. In Africa, 230 million people in sub-Saharan Africa suffering from chronic undernourishment. Increased food production alone is not the solution since there is also a need to improve the whole value chain process.

The Agricultural landscape across Africa has been one of the most promising industries but still one of the most underdeveloped. Majority of Africans rely on food production for daily income. Furthermore, expenditure on food entails the largest portion of purchases by households in Africa.

With large chunks of arable lands and largely favorable climate, Africa should be food sufficient but it is not. A combination of bad farming inputs, planting methods, food storage and preservation and transportation and market dynamics affect the sector. These problems have contributed to the current state of affairs whereby the majority of farmers only undertake subsistence farming whereas there is an opportunity for large-scale commercial farming.

At the heart of these problems is lack of timely and actionable data that can be used to improve the agricultural sector.

It is necessary to have a system that captures the right data related to farming inputs, outputs and relayed to the market in order to have a better connection between the market and farmer. In addition, better data capture can help improve farming methods and enable farmers to sell more and buyers to get more value for their money.

improving the entire value chain chain-land tenure, farming technology, access to markets and pricing, are key to transforming the food ecosystem in Africa’. –The African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET).

PLAAS solution

PLAAS technology platform aims to change the narrative by being a farmers’ management platform that enables timely capture and management of plants and animal data as well as enabling a marketplace for buyers and sellers. PLAAS is an Afrikaans word for a farm. PLAAS the company was founded in 2017 and is a partnership under Satoshicentre in Botswana. PLAAS token will be the native token for the PLAAS blockchain ecosystem.

What does this mean for farmers and buyers?

PLAAS seeks to leverage the blockchain technology by providing players in the agricultural sector with a platform for storing and sharing agricultural related information.

INPUTTING and TRACKING: Information related to breeding; ancestry of animals is stored on the platform. This would help both buyers and farmers. For farmers, they are able to have a true record of important agricultural data that would be necessary for buyers to make a purchase decision. In assistance with extension officers, farmers input information related to breed, ancestry, number of births, feeding type, number of vaccinations, yields, etc. As for plants, information related to time of planting, type of seedlings, ploughing, insecticides used, planting time etc is captured.

The buyers can easily access this information by paying a small fee. Buyers are assured of the authenticity of the information since it is verified by various parties such as agricultural extension officers. Buyers can therefore easily make a more appropriate decision than the current state of the market where they have to rely on farmers words. In addition, sometimes the farmers forget important information because of poor record keeping.

The platform also provides information about plants as well in order to keep track of food life cycle from production to the time of buying in a supermarket or grocery store.

REAL TIME: with the use of RFID, PLAAS uses real-time wireless sensors integrated with all the participating farmers in order to have easy monitoring and tracking of growth of crops and animals.

Why use blockchain technology

The platform will rely on RFID and blockchain. RFID is used for ensuring the following:

SECURE PLATFORM: The case for using blockchain is because of its tamper-proof unlike a centralized database. For the first time, it will be possible to have an agricultural platform that can store and share information about crops and animals in a secure and tamper-proof manner. Blockchain transactions are linked to each other in blocks and this makes it hard to alter information once entered.

Governance platform: the blockchain enforces a governance system that places the responsibility to various parties. Different parties will part of the platform and can see what other parties are doing without the possibility of changing the information later on. The self-governance ecosystem is important for ensuring trust of all parties involved.

ERC20 tokens: with the use of the Ethereum platform, it is possible to develop a marketplace ecosystem that connects farmers and buyers. Buyers just need to use PLAAS token to make any purchases which are as simple as sending a transaction from one person to another. Farmers receive the tokens and can convert them to any currency they wish. As the ecosystem grows, the value of the PLAAS token will appreciate in value leading to gains by both the farmer and the buyers.

RFID and blockchain: fusing RFID and blockchain provide a next-level platform that keeps real-time tracking of plants and animals. RFID helps in tracking while blockchain helps in storage of data; the combination of the two unleashes the final puzzle in unlocking the full benefits of agricultural ecosystem across Africa.

Mobile application: The information will easily be accessed through mobile-based application. This makes it easier for both the farmers and buyers to undertake transactions.

To implement the system, PLAAS is rolling out fundraising through ICO. The ICO is scheduled to start on January 1, 2019, and end on Feb 28, 2019. The pre-sale for private investors will start on December 2018.
